Appalachian Traditional Egg Basket Weaving
1-5 PM
Instructor: Susan McRoy of Harp Yarns Learn how to make these
traditional ‘rib’ baskets, which were once used to take eggs to market. We
think they’re the perfect size for collecting eggs from backyard chickens—or
holding just about anything. During the course of the class you’ll start and
finish your very own basket. All materials and refreshments will be
supplied.

Young Farmer’s Day
Want a taste of Day Camp before summer
starts? Our day camp staff will be on hand for two Saturdays in May to host
a fun-filled day of farm activities. In addition, we'll have professional
chef, Greg Johnson,

hand to keep parents entertained with a culinary class focused on how to
feed your kids wholesome, delicious meals that are simple to prepare. Enjoy
a beautiful organic lunch highlighting ingredients produced on the farm
before you head home.

Kids Meet the Kids...Goat kids that is!
12-4 PM
This is our last public event until October. We have so much that has
happened since Duckling Day! In addition to our new baby goats, we have
goslings, ducklings, turkey and chicken poults, and lots planted in the
fields. Explore the farm on our new Mother Goose self-guided tour. Go for a
wagon ride pulled by our Percheron draft horses. And participate in the
Spring Greens tasting to experience the variety of flavors available to add
to your meals. We'll have plant starts available to get your own garden off
to a great start. Learn about our summer offerings from culinary classes to
young farmer's day camp. Event fee is $5/car--refunded with a paid
registration to one of our classes or Day Camp.

Growing and Using Herbs

Nothing compares to having fresh herbs available at home. It doesn’t take
much to grow them yourself – they’ll even thrive on the window sill! In this
class we’ll talk all about herb gardens, sites and cultivation tips, and
we'll demonstrate how to use what you've grown to brighten up your cooking,
infuse oils and freshen up your home.

if you want veggies from your backyard this winter they need to be planted
in July or August! Learn about cold weather veggies, overwintering
varieties, and how to get things started successfully for harvest in late
fall and early spring.

As the summer vegetables are winding down it’s the perfect time to talk
about seed saving. There’s a little bit of science involved, but seed saving
is relatively simple, interesting, and a cost effective way to grow your
vegetables from year to year. Who knows, you could create the next great
vegetable breed in your own backyard!

Putting the garden to bed

The success of your garden next year depends on how you overwinter it this
year. In this class, we’ll discuss methods of ‘putting the garden to bed’
for the winter including green manures or cover crops, and mulching.

Wreath making
It’s one of the hallmarks of the season – a fresh evergreen wreath hanging
from the front door. Join us as we use tree boughs, winter berries, and
other native plants to make beautiful wreaths that you can take home just in
time for the holidays.

Winter Craft Camp
Have your kids join us for a full day of crafting on the farm. We’ll stay
warm and dry while making some holiday crafts and enjoying hot cider,
leaving you free to do holiday shopping or have some well deserved down
time. Open to children ages 5-12.
